Crown & Mitre, Spear Street

Crown & Mitre, Spear Street. (c) northmanchester.net.

The Crown & Mitre off Stevenson Square used to display stuffed birds, animals and insects and such exotic artifacts under owner James Stell.  Note the stern warnings on his adverts: "No person allowed to enter the room in a state of intoxication".  Stell eventually moved up in the world and took his stuff to a bigger pub in Collyhurst, and the Crown & Mitre lost its licence due to being an "exceedingly badly conducted house" [1].  The 1849 map shows the Crown & Mitre on the corner of Spear Street and Friday (now Farraday) Street with entrances on both streets.  The pub was probably cleared when the Lever Street bus station (itself now gone) was built.
