Cheshire Cheese, Oldham Road

Cheshire Cheese, Oldham Road, Ancoats. (c) Neil Richardson [1].

The Cheshire Cheese at the bottom of Oldham Road in New Cross fell into disrepair before it finally closed its doors around 2005, being boarded up in 2007. These photos from 1959, 1962 and the 1970s show the pub as a John Smiths house in better days, and going further back, Mick Burke recalls that "the Cheshire Cheese was patronised by the Italians. It had a singing room and Johnny King, the boxer, kept it in the 1950s. In the 1920s and 1930s the Cheshire Cheese was kept by Joe Keogh, the bookmaker; there was no singing room then and it was very select [1]."

One of its first landlords was Peter Forster who had come from the Ring O'Bells, and the next landlord, Joseph Linney, ran it for decades and led to the Cheshire Cheese being known as Linney's.

  2. A man was murdered there in 1890. Tommy Cosgrove stabbed Jim Ashton, the owner's son, to death over a quart of beer.
