Rothwells, Spring Gardens. (c) Scottyweb.
Rothwells opened approximately the same time as its close neighbour, Athenaeum, it set out to attract the bottle-drinking, trendy crowd. It was housed in the 120-year old, Grade-II listed Lancashire & Yorkshire Bank building. It was a big open pub with virtually nowhere to sit and standing room only, with music at silly levels at weekend. For a while it was packed to the rafters, however as is usually the case, it soon fell out of favour and eventually closed. It turned into the restaurant Establishment which has also now closed.
