Pendulum, Long Millgate

Pendulum, Long Millgate, 1990. (c) Manchester District Music Archive.

Pendulum was a Northern Soul basement club in the old Manchester Sports Guild jazz cellar on Long Millgate, now long gone, but captured in the above photo 20 years ago. Then derelict, it had closed in 1974 after a compulsory purchase order by the council but typically they did nowt with it for decades. It was eventually leveled and was a car park for a time before the Cathedral Gardens development was created in this area. Pendulum was once located above the old and now lost Victoria pub in Hardman Street off Deansgate. When it moved to Long Millgate it took over this typically dark, sweaty but atmospheric basement bar, where unfortunately it was one of the first places to serve ale in the dreaded plastic pint pots [1]!
