Houghton Arms, Butler Street

Houghton Arms, Butler Street, Ancoats. (c) Neil Richardson [1].

This big corner boozer opened in the 1830s on the corner of South Porter Street and Butler Street at the bottom end of Bradford Road.  The Houghton Arms was a Threlfalls house and was replaced by the Magpie estate pub in 1963 [1].  The Magpie has also been pulled down in the name of progress, and the spot where the Houghton Arms and its replacement stood remains a grassy corner with nothing on it.
