Wallness Tavern, Wallness Lane

The Wallness Tavern on the edge of Peel Park, Frederick Park and on the Salford University campus, has closed.  Although advertising itself as a student pub, it sounded like the classic off-the-beaten-track locals pub - erratic and short opening times, fierce locals and apparent hostility to outsiders.

The Tetley house has undergone a few face lifts, with green, red and black signs over recent years, and the latest - a smokers tent - suggested a downwards spiral in recent years.  In the unlikely event that the Wallness Tavern reopens, we'll pay it a visit as the net spreads slowly outwards from the city centre...

  1. Disappointed in this closing, yet another piece of my youth dies! When I attended Salford Uni I understood that the Student Union owned this pub and back in the 80's was well kept and run (from a student's POV of course). Have many fond memories of this place.

  2. In the early 90s, the Wally was on route back from the main campus to my digs at Castle Irwell (and later, Lower Broughton Rd) and many was the return trip that got interrupted for a pit-stop. Haven't been back there in 17 years though, so I guess I can't have been all that fond of the place.

  3. I blame the students for not getting pissed enough:) This had become a dead-end locals pub and not really a suprise that it's shut.

  6. My son is a Fresher at Salford uni. Dropped him off hoping to relive my time at Salford by having a pint at this establishment 30 yrs after graduation. Celebrated my last exam here. Sadly to find it is no longer there. Sad times.

  7. I remember it was around 2009, I was a student and I was drinking alone in this pub.

Surrounded by locals, watching Newcastle play (I'm a Newcastle fan)

We played horrible and we were relegated the next game.

The locals were smoking in the pub, polite enough to ask me if this was alright (smoking ban was already in place by this time)

Was very much a strangers not welcome vibe, students stay away.
I was quiet, alone and eager to find a TV, they shown mercy and were good company all night.

Felt quite sad having my virtual revisit of the area today through google maps.
