The Appleford was a north Manchester estate pub on the corner of Appleford Road and Queens Road in Cheetham Hill and has now been converted to the Nawab curry house. This buffet-style Indian opened in 2007 and before that it was the Desi Lounge. It's not clear when the Appleford closed but Alan Winfield has a picture of the Appleford in 1993 at Pubs Galore, confirming it as a Whitbread house offering Chesters and Boddies [1].
I used to go into this corner estate pub, when i was a kid-living only a minutes walk from the place itself.
ReplyDeleteThat pub was called the 53 when I lived there in the early 80's,Mick the landlord and his massive great dane dog..
ReplyDeleteMe and my husband, Tom and Barbara Garwell were the very first landlord/lady of The 53 when it was opened in 1979(?). Back then, it was Whitbreads only, no Boddies. We had a long-haired alsation named Sheba, and a tabby cat, who used to wait at the doors to be let in along with some of the customers
