King Richard II, Edge Street

King Richard II, Edge Street, 1907. (c) Market Restaurant.

The Empress Brewery's King Richard II features on the cover of Batdford's Manchester Then and Now in a 1907 photo with the extensive wholesale markets in the background.  In 1934 its licence was transferred to the Gorton Mount Hotel in Gorton, something which was quite common at the time [1].  For the last 30-ish years it's been the highly-rated Market Restaurant, which will have witnessed this area decline and then be reborn in the last decade as the trendy Northern Quarter.
