Annabels, Wood Street

Possible former location of Annabels, Wood Street. (c) googlemaps.

It's possible that this old nightclub was once the Beer Keller on Wood Street, just off Deansgate, down the side of the Hog's Head.  Annabels was at No.8 Wood Street in the early 1980s [1] and as the only legible number on the whole street is No.26 at the far end on the right, it's possible that Annabels was on in or under this building.  Anyone remember this one?

  3. The Blood Club, a great Punk goth night,
I saw the punk poet Joolz Denby perform here. It would make a great little bar, I wonder who owns it now, and is it up for rent.

    1. Yes he did...George had his own private entrance which lead to a door just behind the middle bar in the club and he would just appear behind the bar in the corner! He was quite shy at first but still used to stand his round of drinks! The middle bar was in a sort of annex opposite the dance floor and DJ (Ian) and used to fill with the usual click of people. This was one of - if not the best club in the 70s. The owner Les was a fantastic guy and his private house parties were amazing!

I also remember him chatting 2 Norwegian au pairs up at main bar. I sidled over to join in, he winked at me and I took one of them for a dance and after for frolics. I frolicked with her for a month, no doubt George frolicked for a night only.

  9. Les Simm was a proper man and very good friend. I went on holidays with him to Mallorca on many occasions whilst he was landlord of The Commercial.
