Canal Bar, Whitworth Street West

Pictured above in 2002, first of all to the left is the demolished Hacienda. The still-standing building housed The Venue night club, a favourite haunt of ours when the Hac shut its doors - The Venue shut, I believe, in the early '00s. The bottom two blue windows used to house the Canal Bar. Never went in here, but in the Hac's heyday it was a pre-club haunt for many clubbers, like the City Road Inn. These days the pricey but ugly Hacienda flats sit in the place of the old yacht builders yard, yacht show room, one-time Bollywood cinema, and most importantly, FAC51.

While the Hac hosted luminaries such as Madonna, New Order (well they were the owners), The Smiths and Happy Mondays, plenty of names played the Canal Bar too - A Certain Ratio, Intastella, Elastica, Oasis...
