I worked at the now demolished Unemployment Benefit Office on Fielden Road between 1989 - 1992. At that time the pub was still called the Midland and had a very poor reputation and was mainly used by local drug dealers, students and claimants of the area. A friend of mine moved in to a flat in Withington and he and another friend decided to go for a pint at the Midland and asked if I wanted to join them that evening. I said that I'd best not as I'd be recognised as working at the Dole Office and anyone who'd had a row in the office that day, may take it out on me. The next time I saw them, I asked what he thought of the pub. He said, whilst playing pool in the back room, a guy had walked in with a crowbar, jemmied the cashbox from the pool table out of its hinges, put it in a holdall and walked out. They simply stood there open mouthed. Eventually telling the bar staff as they were worried that they may be blamed. Happy days
