Wellington Hotel, Bury New Road / Great Ducie Street

Former Wellington Hotel, Bury New Road, Strangeways. (c) Google 2011. View Larger Map.

The Wellington Hotel was a Threlfalls house seen here in 1971 on the corner of Moulton Street and Bury New Road.  Although the Wellington Hotel is long gone, the building still survives here in Strangeways / Cheetham, less than half a mile north-west of Victoria Station and in its day would have been one of the closest pubs to the prison.  The roof and frontage has undergone some renovation since the days of the Wellington but next door hasn't changed at all.  In the 1800s this stretch of Bury New Road was a continuation of Great Ducie Street, as per the 1891 map below.
