Birmingham Arms Inn, Major Street

Mechanics Institute, Princess Street. (c) googlemaps.

On the corner of Princess Street and Major Street is J. E. Gregan's 1854 Grade II listed building, the Mechanics Institute which later became the National Museum of Labour History (though is still known as the former). Just five years previous the 1849 map of Manchester showed the Birmingham Arms Inn on this corner of what was then David Street and Major Street (Princess Road had yet to be established as a main thoroughfare through town) [1].
