080. Mitre Hotel, Cateaton Street

Situated next to Sinclairs, the Wellington and the Crown & Anchor, this hotel-cum-pub is a bit of a strange one. Whilst it always had a non-residents bar, it has somewhat piggybacked on the back of its neighbours' success and has developed into a pub in its own right. On the plus side, it has a great location between the other pubs and with a quieter drinking area at the back overlooking the cathedral, which offers a pleasant respite from the crowds in the square. On the negative side is the lack of real ale, the fairly high prices (£17 for a round of five standard pints), and the disgusting garishly coloured interior which wouldn't be out of place in the campest of bars in the gay village. But each to their own, eh? It's difficult to make a case for going in here other than to use the toilets, when the beer is so much better next door.

  1. A massively wasted opportunity. Can't see why you would want to drink in here, all things considered.
