This grim looking place, pictured here in the 1970s, was a popular newspaper pub due to its proximity to the old Manchester Guardian / Evening News offices on Cross Street. Its exact location on Pall Mall was kindly confirmed by a reader. As seen in the photo, an entrance to the Tavern was next door to the UCP entrance, while the front faced onto Market Street. That UCP entrance took you to the lift and stairs up to the cafe and restaurant above the tripe shop (UCP standing for United Cattle Products, specialising in tripe). The restaurant was quite posh (silver service) and served wonderful roast beef dinners. The building is still there, and the Tavern occupied about half the width between Market Street and New Market Lane as seen in these 1960 and 1964 photos. Thanks for this information.
