076. Derby Brewery Arms, Cheetham Hill Road

Derby Brewery Arms, Cheetham Hill Road, 2010. (c) Pubs of Manchester.

The Derby Brewery Arms is just outside our initially set boundary but we've decided to include it as the only brewery tap pub left in the town centre, and that of - in our opinion - Manchester's finest of the four family brewers. Attached to the Joseph Holts Derby Brewery on Empire Street, you would think this would be a flagship Holts pub, but it's in need of a little bit of a cosmetic makeover if we're honest with a tired outside facade giving it a slightly intimidating look. The al fresco drinking terrace out front is nothing more than a couple of beer garden benches surrounded by low walls; but a sun trap on Manchester's sunnier days. However, it's quite pleasant inside, and we were met with a friendly smile from the barmaid, instead of the usual scowls you can receive in some of these places. Ale is the usual Holts fayre and as such is a cracking pint as expected and at £1.92 a pint, cheap for city centre. I don't recall a pool table and I think it's just an old-fashioned drinking pub really. Sadly there isn't enough of these left these days.
