Woolsack Hotel, Great Ducie Street

The Woolsack Hotel stood on the corner of Southall Street and Great Ducie Street in Strangeways in the shadow of the famous Strangeways prison, known these days as HMP Manchester.

It would have been a favoured drinking spot for defendants and court officials, being situated, as it was was, opposite the grand of Manchester Assize Courts, which were built in 1864 but suffered bomb damage in WWII and was fully demolished in 1957.

Whilst having a Great Ducie Street address, the Woolsack faced mainly onto Southall Street, as can be seen above, though today nothing stands on this corner.
