Manhattan, Spring Gardens

Manhattan Sound, Spring Gardens. (c) Debbie at MDMA.

Manhattan or Manhattan Sound was a small club, possibly a basement venue, on Spring Gardens where occasionally local bands like The Smiths [1] and Simply Red [2] cut their teeth (note the amusing John Bull story).

Manhattan, Spring Gardens. (c) dubwise-er at MDMA.

We've heard that it may have been lost to an underground car park, but as below, it may also have been on the corner of Spring Gardens and Fountain Street, now offices.

Possible former location of Manhattan, Spring Gardens. (c) googlemaps.

  3. Manhattan Sound was a gay club in the early 80's. It was run by some lads from Salford and was a basement nightclub. Great place to go even for straight lads. From memory it was not on the corner but a little further down the street and is now offices.

    1. Hi Liz, if you get this message, I'd love to hear from you. I'm doing a research project on Avril A (she was my aunt!) and would love to be in touch. Thanks, Jo

  6. I worked here as Manhattan Sound when it was turned into a hostess dinner club. Cant remember the exact year, probably around 83. Drummer in a cabaret gig 6 nights a week. Loved the club. Loved the Hostages, as we called them. Have very fond memories of all. A gentleman by the name of Solomon Wong was the owner at the time I believe. Joanie, Wendy, I'll love you forever X.
