Staff of Life, Windsor

Staff of Life, Windsor, Salford, 1905. (c) Neil Richardson [1].

Where The Crescent turns into Broad Street, just after the railway bridge, the Staff of Life beerhouse stood on what was then Windsor and the corner of Vulcan Street.  It was recorded in the 1861 directory and by the 1890s the pub was owned by Broadbent's Steam Brewery of Chorlton-on-Medlock, which was soon taken over by the Manchester Brewery Company in 1899.  A couple of years after the above photo was taken, the 1907 brewster sessions reported that the Staff of Life had few customers, the rooms were "most rambling in plan" and difficult to supervise, and the concert and billiards rooms (seen advertised) were dilapidated.  The license was surrendered so that another Broadbent's pub, the Tanners Arms on Oxford Street, could be refurbished [1].
