New Millgate Hotel, Long Millgate

Former new Millgate Hotel, Long Millgate, (c) Manchester District Music Archive.

The New Millgate Hotel was next door to the Manchester Sports Guild (and Pendulum) on Long Millgate according to Lisa on Man Mates [1]. It could therefore have been this building on the right shown above - the green and while colour scheme may hint at a public house. Interestingly, the New Millgate Hotel's only mention is from a 1972 London Gazette in a list of liquidations, the registered office involved being next door to the Lass O'Gowrie on the other side of town.

  1. Hi I worked as a receptionist at The New Millgate hotel. In the 1960's . It was very busy and we have many people staying from Granada TV. Violet Carson stayed every week when working on Coronation St.
Simon and Garfunkel stayed when touring.
I have found great difficulty in finding any information of its history. It was an old building so if anyone can help. Thank You

  2. My mother and step father were close friends of the Managers, Ted and Yvette. Telefski. Not sure if I've spelt that correctly. When the hotel closed, they went to live in Gatley where my family were. They both died some years ago and I have their death certificates. I have cutlery with the New Milgate Hotel engraved on them. Sadly I don't have any photos of the hotel. I worked there as a chamber maid during my holidays and lived in at the top of the building in the attic.

    1. Hello Pattie Tadeusz Telewiak or Ted Telford as he became in 1954 is the father of my second cousin from his first marriage. The split and were divorced soon after she was born. Yvette Jones whom he married in 1970 was his second wife. He was indeed a pilot in WW2 flying Spitfires in the Italian campaign. He was decorated with the Polish Cross of Valour in 1944. Due to an acrimonious split my cousin hardly knows anything of her father. Her mother ensured that she had absolutely no contact with with. variously saying that he had migrated and later was in fact dead. She made a number of attempts as a young girl but was actively and determinedly discouraged her mother. If you have any information on him I would be obliged and would pass it onto my cousin. If you contact me through this forum I will give you my email address.
      Kind regards
      Ken

Hello Ken, yes I knew all the details about him being a pilot ect. They were known as Telford and I know his real name was a polish. I didn’t know he had a daughter. Maybe my mother did. My mother and stepfather were witnesses for Ted and Yvette when they got married and I have photographs.
Yvette was really called Elsie and was indeed Welsh but always fancied herself as French. Very smart lady and very kind to me. She always called me Pattie. I also have a photo of them both at my wedding.
I’d happily share with you. How sad that Teds daughter was denied contact.

  3. We knew them as Telford. Must have changed his name. I know someone told me he was a Polish pilot in the war. They always went to South of France on their holidays and Yvette would have a vague french accent but when was cross and shouted at us it was pure Welsh
