As the name suggests this was an attempt at a German theme bar, similar to the Bier Keller on Piccadilly and the old Beer Kellar on Wood Street. The lads from the 1975 Manchester Pub Guide gave it a scathing review - in German obviously - bemoaning the high prices, cheap decor (with no German influence), crap beer (Youngers Scotch, Tartan, Double Diamond) and mainly teenage clientèle [1]. It was on the left side of Oxford Street, possibly in the block shown, but exact location is unknown.
Barons bier keller was on the far left of the photograph on the ground floor there was a bar usually open at lunchtime 1200 to 1500 hrs. In the evening the basement was open
ReplyDeleteI am replying to my own posting.I may (or not) have to concede that the entrance was more central than to the left. However I can clearly remember that the ‘club’ could be accessed from the ground level bar..
DeletePeople that have been in such as myself know the basement entrance was just near the two phone boxes!

ReplyDeleteTo unknown 7th July can you verify the response from unknown 23 April I seem to remember the entrance being the archway almost at the far left of the photo. But my memory is not what it was in 1970 anonymous 20 Nov 2013
DeleteThis is unknown 7th July in response to Anonymous 24th March I may be wrong with it being such a long time ago but I'm sure the entrance was near the two phone boxes.
ReplyDeleteI remember the entrance being opposite what was Tiffany's, went downstairs and I'm sure there was some sort of bear statue thing outside.
