The Lord Nelson, at the top of Newton Street, just off Great Ancoats Street, has been shut for most of 2010 now and there is no suggestion it'll reopen any time soon. This is a minor loss though, as in recent years it has been something of a no-go pub; both in terms of its clientèle and its lack of ale. Although in the past it has been a Yates' Ardwick Ales (1959), Magnet Ales (1970s and below) and John Smiths (1994) house, in its death throes in the last few years it was a keg-only pub frequented by rough and ready locals who could be rather unwelcoming at times.

Shame, as go back 7-8 years ago and I remember cask and a decent jukebox being on offer. The plaque on the front reads 1895, but there has been a Lord Nelson here since 1830, and in a previous guise it had a brewhouse attached [1].

This really is one that has fallen between the cracks. You do have to wonder, though, how it actually managed to keep going as long as it did.
ReplyDeleteAll manner of dodgy types could be spotted inside or loitering in the doorway as you crossed to the other side of the road when passing. Always seemed to have enough punters in, and was a bit of a red's haunt on match day.
ReplyDeleteNow demolished.
