This old pub was still standing derelict when we did our Salford pub crawl last year, but it's since been demolished. Originally the St Phillips Hotel, Jollies is yet another to add to the Chapel Street - Crescent pubs death knoll (despite being just off The Crescent on Oldfield Road on the corner of Factory Lane).

In the above photo from Salford 1940-1965 by Roy Bullock there is a "....e of Wales", apparently next door, which is probably the the Prince of Wales, which is odd, as there was recently a Prince of Wales further down Oldfield Road.
There were two Princes of Wales on Oldfield Road - it wasn't unusual for there to be two similarly named pubs in close proximity in Salford - they were usually differentiated as the 'Big' and 'Little' - hence the Big Queens and Little Queens on Regent Road, the Big Derby and Little Derby on Derby Street and the Big Dover and Little Dover in Higher Broughton (both still open and worth a visit). Strangely though, this smaller Prince of Wales seems to have been commonly known as 'Little's' not because of it's comparative size but because it was run by the Little family from 1910 until the 1950s. Now of course we all know it as Chung's Chippy.
ReplyDeleteGreat insight as always; still many (probably hundreds) of old Salford pubs to go yet. I know the Dover, but didn't realise the Dover Castle was still going
ReplyDeleteThank you for your work. I am researching a friend's family history and discovered that her great grandfather was the St Philips Hotel keeper in the 1901 census, a Mr Henry Hobson. After a quick search I was so happy to have found your site and photos of said hotel.
ReplyDeleteThanks again

Can anyone tell me about my uncle Chris who ran this pub back in the eighties
