The Mechanics Arms was a Threlfalls house on Boardman Street off Fairfield Street. Boardman Street, which ran alongside Mayfield Station, one of central Manchester's forgotten railway stations, has long-been renamed Baring Street.
Shown in 1963 and in these two 1969 photos, in the place of the Mechanics and its next-door neighbour, the Volunteer, is just a car park. Further down Baring Street the street crosses the River Medlock and this plaque commemorates its reconstruction over 100 years ago, confirming the old name of the street.
