Belmont, Middleton Road

Belmont, Middleton Road, Crumpsall, 1990. (c) deltrems at flickr [1].

The Belmont was a big hotel and pub on Middleton Road, Crumpsall, off Bury Old Road south of Heaton Park.  Shown here in 1968, a few years later in 1971 and above in 1990 [1], the Belmont now appears to be a child care centre.  When Alan Winfield visited the Belmont Tavern in 1995 he noted it was a still a food-led Chef & Brewer-branded Wilsons house, offering Wilsons and Websters Bitter by way of ale [2].

  1. The Belmont was a real magnet for young people in the mid seventies as all the large roadhouse type pubs had makeovers to attarct the younger , trendier drinkers. As each pub was refurbed , there was a temporary migration to the newest thing before everyone settled back to the most convenient. The first was the Lion and Lamb ( later the Wrecker) in Blackley followed by the Belmont, Berkshire and Broadway amongst others. Ted S
