Black Horse, Greek Street

Black Horse, Greek Street, Chorlton-on-Medlock, 1952. (c) Bob Potts (1997).

The Black Horse was one of the first alehouses in Chorlton-on-Medlock, opening in 1821 on Greek Street off Grosvenor Street.  It became a Walker & Homfray and then Wilsons three-storey house before it closed in 1964 [1].  Greek Street still exists today, a short dead-end, and the Black Horse stood a few doors down on the left, just where it ends.

  1. This is really interesting - I recently discovered that a distant relative, Martha Pendleton, owned the Dog Inn (and?) Brewhouse on Greek Street when she died in 1855. Its still on the census in 1871 but am unsure how long it survivied for.

Its nice to see an image, albeit a small area, of an inhabited Greek Street. Hopefully the Dog inn would have existed long enough for someone to have taken a photo.

    1. That would be excellent. My info is fairly basic - Martha had a daughter Mary who married John Scholfield in July 1823. Its not clear if they ran the pub after Martha died (or even who did when she was alive) but its residents are from a different family by 1871. And - thats it!

    2. The Dog Inn survived another 51 years, closing in 1922 as a Groves & Whitnall house. There doesn't appear to be any photos of the Dog Inn or even of Greek Street. The closest I can find is this one of Back Newton Street:

The photographer is stood on Greek Street looking onto the side street. It was taken in 1906 but at least gives you an idea of the area.
