Russell Social Club, Russell Street

Russell Social Club, Russell Street, Hulme. (c) Hulme CoM, All Saints, Ardwick Facebook.

The celebrated Russell Club, later known as the PSV (Public Service Vehicle) Club, The Factory and the Caribbean Club, was built to replace this ramshackle old place, the Russell Social Club.  The new Russell Club on Royce Street was as big as the old Russell Street one, but more brutal in its design than the original.

  2. I am doing some genealogy research and have found a relative listing his address as 14 Russell Street, Hulme. I believe his mother either owned or worked at a hotel in the early 1920s. Is there any listing of licensees etc for around that period. I am looking for Louisa Whalen whose husband Thomas was a french polisher.

    Many thanks.

  3. My Dad used to performm at this venue quite a bit during the late 60's - 70's. His name is Alan Western and he was quite a well known figure in the Manchester pub and club circuit doing cabaret rock music, mostly covers of Top 40 pop songs of the day. After we emigrated to Brisbane in Australia in 1982, he started to perform at RSL clus until 1990 when he found his true calling as a jazz singer at the Brisbane Jazz Club.
He has been back to the UK a few times, more recently performing the one man play "Stages Of My Life" at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
    His website is: https://www.alanwestern.com
