Gardeners Arms, Victory Street

The Gardeners Arms was not one I'd frequent regularly, though definitely had a few in here over the years - I remember the fug of weed and the collection going round for "The Cause" (it was an Irish pub).  It's shown at the archives in 1973 as a Greenall Whitley house.

The Gardeners Arms was renowned as something of a Manchester muso's hangout out on match day with faces from the local music scene - Rob Gretton, Kevin Cummins, Mike Pickering, Doves, etc. - drinking in here with their pals.

The Gardeners sat between the Lord Lyon / Nelson and the Rusholme Working Mens Social Club and can be seen on the left of the club here in 1973 - sadly all three of watering holes are now gone.  I'd assumed the Gardeners had been demolished following reports of a new block of flats.  However, this is still the original pub building, now non-whitewashed, with a new extension built on the side.

    i grew up in that pub from the late 80's to the mid 90's. my mam and daa ran it. i remember ciss the bar lady. woah...many years ago now. fond memories xx

    The names you mentioned re 'holding court' didn't do that,they just happened to drink there with their mates. You make them sound like a bunch of pretentious muso's.

    You couldn't be further from the truth.

    I worked there from the late seventies for jimmy and mary blanchfield then frank and Bernie roe then Derek burton then pat and shelia McGovern and finally pat and and Theresa Conway .top pub top people great times

      I grew up in the Gardeners my mum and dad are Mary and jimmy blanchfield I have some great memories of staff and customers was very lively and busy pub .

    I frequented the Gardeners in the late 80's. It had a great atmosphere - particularly when 'Stan the Man' would play on Wednesdays and Thursdays - and CP Lee's version of 'Just Like a Woman' is unforgettable. The pool competitions could be edgy too...great memories
