The first of the lost pubs around United's ground, Old Trafford in Stretford, the Dog & Partridge is pictured as a Chef & Brewer pub in 1992. It's also shown in 1973 (wrongly labelled as Chorlton Road, Hulme) when it was larger - where the games room entrance was in 1992 used to be an extra wing of the pub. It's since been demolished and a Wetherspoons, the Bishop Blaize, built adjacent to it. The brick and stone gatepost on the right of the 1992 photo remains today, showing exactly where the Dog & Partridge once stood - on that car park.

It's a pity how the colour scheme used in its last years obscured the attractive ground-floor stonework. Another very impressive pub in its heyday.

DeleteWetherspoons did not build the building it now occupies. It was built by H & J Quick as their first garage / showroom in 1912. Since then it has been used by a variety of firms including Horlicks and Ruberoid. Prior to Wetherspoons it was a Car Audio specialist.
ReplyDeleteWent to a dodgy secondary school up the road (now demolished like everything else in mc) so this was a natural first choice of pub to get drunk in as a teenager. Late eighties. Mid-week it was easy to get served at 16 if certain codes of behaviour were adhered to. Great old pub. Sadly missed...
