York Hotel, King Street

Site of former York Hotel, King Street. (c) tbc.

Today a blue plaque can be seen here which honours the historical novelist William Harrison Ainsworth [1] who was born on this site on King Street in 1805. The York Hotel was built after the Ainsworth's three-storey Georgian house was demolished. It was in this public house and hotel that the Anti-Corn Law League was formed in 1838 by local mill owners, politicians and protesting members of the public [2]. The Anti-Corn Law League eventually led to the formation of the Free Trade Hall as a meeting place, near St Peter's Square, the site of the Peterloo Massacre of 1819. The imposing NatWest bank building now stands on the site of the York.
