Wellington, Nicholas Croft

The huge old Wilsons house, the Wellington, is seen here in the 1970s and here earlier in 1959 and 1960 as the Wellington Hotel.  It was positioned just where High Street becomes Nicholas Croft, placing it opposite the English Lounge (Wheatsheaf / Bensons / Hogshead) on High Street.  The Wellington was built in 1825 and was one of many pubs that made way for the Arndale Centre in the 1970s.

The Wellington was known as the Sawyer's Arms in the 1800s, as Benjamin Brierley, Failsworth's famous son, wrote: "The old 'Sawyer's Arms', now the Wellington Hotel, Nicholas Croft, was at one time a favourite calling place for handloom weavers. Its name got corrupted into 'Sorrow's Arms;' and I never in those days heard it called by any other [1]."
