Hen & Chickens, Oldham Street

The Hen & Chickens was on Oldham Street seen in this battered photo from around 1900, next door to where Night & Day is now.  This evocative photo from the early 1900s shows the Old Hen & Chickens in the background, as does this postcard from a similar time.

The Hen & Chickens was on the right-hand side of Oldham Street, between Dale Street and Hilton Street, and "today (1996) there is a gap in the line of Oldham Street where the Hen & Chickens once stood, but you can still see a reminder of the pub - the word "Billiards" on the back wall [1]".  That means the pub was most likely here as this is the only modern building in the row (the egg sign is also a nice coincidence):

There's a link to a still standing pub, as the landlord of the Hen & Chickens before the First World War was called Foy.  One of his daughters married the local boxer, Boy McCormick, and they later went on to keep the Crown & Kettle, just up the road [1].

  1. On the 1911 Census, George Henry Dale (40, born in Cheshire),a Publican, wife Ethel 32 & son Claude 12 (both born Manchester) were at the "Hen & Chicken". He and his parents, George & Sarah had moved to Newton Heath in time for the 1881 Census.
