Gaping Goose / Shudehill Hotel, Shudehill

Gaping Goose, Shudehill. (c) Manchesteronline.

The Gaping Goose, also known as the Shudehill Hotel, was a big semi-circular shaped market pub on the corner of Shudehill and Miller Street.  Market folk would often knock on the front door in the morning, hand the landlady some rabbits and ask her to cook them for opening time.  When market traders popped in for a pint later they would all get a free meal.  Meanwhile the chaps who'd supplied to rabbits would then sell the skins on the market [1].  The Gaping Goose, seen above in a rather grainy image from the 1900s), was lost some time before 1959 as this photo show it had already gone.
