The Red Lion stood here from the early 19th century until the early to mid 20th century. I'm not sure if the pub took up the whole building shown or just the left side. The section to the right was once a gallery, where it exhibited sets from the excellent but underrated BBC series, Cutting It.

Soon to become the Red Lion again thanks to Hydes. http://www.thebusinessdesk.com/northwest/news/565286-hydes-plans-northern-quarter-hotel-and-pub.html
ReplyDeleteGreat news. Must be 60-70 years since it last served a pint...
ReplyDeleteThere exists an oblique photo of the pub (wrongly attributed to the Barley Mow, which was the diagonally opposite corner of the block) on Manchester Images Collection, a wonderful resource. Catlow Lane was then (1892) Church Lane.
ReplyDeleteThe building is now a Hyde's pub the Abel Heywood - see http://ackworthborn.blogspot.co.uk/2016/01/abc-wednesday-is-for-abel-heywood.html
