Grove, New Brown Street / Broom Street

Grove, New Brown Street. (c) Manchester Local Image Collection. Click here to view full image.

The Grove is seen here on New Brown Street as a Wilsons house in the 1970s, and earlier in 1965.  It was one of many pubs that were lost when the Arndale Centre was built.  The photo below shows New Brown Street, once known as "Manchester's Carnaby Street", being demolished to make way.

The 1849 map shows the Grove Inn on what was then a very short street known as Broom Street, just off Shudehill [1].   This street, and Duke Street which it led onto, must have become New Brown Street at a much later date.
