Bay Horse, Long Millgate

Seen from Corporation Street in 1969 and 1971, the Tetleys house the Bay Horse faced onto Long Millgate, as seen in 1972.  It was on this corner, with the longest part of the pub running down Hanover Street, with Victoria Station behind it.

Tony Dixon on the Manchester Forum remembers the Bay Horse: "The pub had a most unusual lay-out with the bar being at ground level as you'd expect but the tap-room complete with Manchester dart board was up a flight of stairs whilst the best room was in the basement [1]."

The 1849 map shows the Bay Horse on the corner of Hanover Street and Long Millgate, which makes sense when Corporation Street is superimposed over the old map [2].  The 1915 map shows the location of the Bay Horse on this corner after Corporation Street had been extended [3], as shown here in 1969; an engineering feat which preserved the Bay Horse.
