The original Bay Horse was this tiny little old boozer, shown in 1969 and 1970, on Stockport Road, just northwest of Dickenson Road in Longsight. Its replacement was a grimly functional shopping centre style pub built by Boddingtons, shown in 1975 and at Manchester History only four years ago [1]. Its recent closure and conversion to a fruit and veg shop leaves Longsight a two-pub district, the Huntington estate pub and the Gold Cup, following the closure of the Springbank, Crown / Ceili Inn and even the ill-fated and short-lived Wetherspoons.

I remember going in this pub about 25 years ago on a CAMRA Friday night pub crawl, at around 7.30 pm. Dog-rough doesn't even begin to describe it, and also well populated with drunks even at that early hour (before all-day opening).
ReplyDeleteSounds delightful, can't say I had the pleasure before it closed. Did you see my question about the Pop Inn which you mentioned on your blog? Do you know which old pub it was in?
ReplyDeleteSorry, I've mentioned it on Tandleman's blog here, but can't remember its original name. John Clarke might know.
ReplyDeleteLooking at the design of the new Bay Horse, reckon Robinson's and Boddington's must have shared the same architect around that time!

My father was resident singer here for a while, during Jimmy and Christine Donoghues' tenure and I have to say on the weekend it was a fantastic boozer. Sadly missed.
ReplyDeleteThis was one of the best pubs ive ever set foot in.
ReplyDeleteSo good i later became licencee.
I am related to Tommy Beevers on my mothers side of the family.
ReplyDeleteI live in Australia.
Tommy Beevers was the publican of the Bay Horse many years ago.
I think in the 1950's or earlier ?
Tommy was my grandfather.By 1947 he was living on Shepley Street. I believe he ran the pub during the war.
