Aces, Clowes Street

The Aces estate pub on Clowes Street in West Gorton is shown in happier times 20 years ago by Alan Winfield when it offered several real ales [1].  Named after the Belle Vue Aces whose old Hyde Road stadium wasn't far from here (their current home at the greyhound stadium is a bit further away), the Aces has been shut for a few years now.

Inside the pub had plenty of speedway memorabilia including photos of Aces legends, Peter Collins, Chris Morton & Co, and apparently race jackets and even a old bike were kept in the pub [2].  Trade from fans drifted away when the Hyde Road stadium was demolished in the late 1980s.

  1. I lived in the West Gorton area in the '50s and much of it was a slum that couldn't have been preserved, yet the subsequent rebuilding was of amazingly poir quality, so bleak that it deserved to be pulled down as it has been.
