Squares, Peter Street. (c) Adam B. at flickr.
Like its neighbour, Chicago Rock Café (far right, above), Squares is one of the most recent closures in Manchester and hardly surprising given the dreadful state of bars down Peter Street. While the Northern Quarter continues to thrive with new openings such as Noho, Black Dog Ballroom and 57 Thomas Street, Peter Street looks to be also losing the lower end of the market due to the Printworks and a possible resurgence of Deansgate Locks. Can't say I ever went in here, but you can imagine how awful it undoubtedly was. A few comments from elsewhere: "Absolutely awful! Full of scallies and underage kids! Cocktails are nice though!"... "I think we should celebrate the fact that Squares has closed. Dance on its horrible grave. The recession will get rid of a lot of shit." Quite.
