Manchester Arms, Tib Street

On the corner of Tib Street and Thomas Street was the Manchester Arms.  Like its neighbour up Tib Street, the Black Boy, it was a gambling den, and in 1896 the police started surveillance on the pub.  In one day they recorded 200 people per hour going in and out.  They discovered that the landlord would sit at a table in the pub's front room with lists of runners (presume this meant cockerels rather than horses).  He was fined £100 by the courts but simply carried on his betting trade only to be fined again six months later, so he must have been making fair profits [1].

This part of town (the Northern Quarter) was described as often impassable such were the thronging crowds around the pubs and beerhouses, betting on cock fights.  Ironically, several decades later Tib Street became famed for its pet shops, particualrly in the 1960s and '70s, although these days only one or two remain.  The  Manchester Arms appears to have been on the corner of Thomas Street and Tib Street, which until recently was a foreign bank.

UPDATE 2013:  As of July 2013 this building has seen the welcome opening of Evuna (of Deansgate fame) Spanish tapas bar [2].
