The House That Jack Built was a very distinctive 1970s estate pub, opening in 1975 at the newly-built Newbury Place shopping centre off Bury New Road in Higher Broughton.

It was described in the Manchester Evening News at the time as "something entirely different" - a maze of bars, passages and alcoves with an indoor tree house [1]!

ReplyDeleteIt did have cask beer on when I first drank in there in the 80s and was a jumping off point for many a crawl. Really went downhill and by the time it was Jacks was pretty damn rough.

ReplyDeleteWas it named after Shelagh Delaney's play ? She was born in Broughton and wrote many plays based in Salford.

ReplyDeleteI lived here for a few years in the 80's, fond memories as a kid.
It certainly went downhill after it became Jacks. Rough doesn't even cover it. As for the name, as with other pubs of the same name, I believe it comes from the old nursery rhyme
ReplyDelete"This is the maiden all forlorn,
That milked the cow with the crumpled horn,
That tossed the dog,
That worried the cat,
That killed the rat,
That ate the malt
That lay in the house that Jack built."
etc etc

ReplyDeleteI too lived in the pub, when my Dad (Harry Mercer) was the Landlord for a year or two. That would have been very late seventies. Gary Bailey was the UTD keeper, so probably around 79/80.

ReplyDeleteJessica Lewis - What has this to do with "The House That Jack Built"? It will get you no customers for whatever-it-is you're trying to advertise. What an unintelligent, annoying woman you are.
