Excelsior Hotel, Manchester Airport

The Excelsior Hotel was the original Manchester Airport Hotel before Ringway (as it is still often called locally) was expanded in the 1990s.  The Excelsior used to be outside the original Terminal 1 which opened in 1962, and it was often used as overspill free parking for the small car park outside the terminal [2].  The Excelsior was also familiar to plane spotters (and families on 'days out' at the airport; hugely popular back in the day) as the entry to the old spectator gallery was next to the hotel [3].

    Hard to imagine how (only 25 to 30 years ago) this was Manchester Airport's only hotel. Before the Hilton opened, I think the Post House hotel in Northenden was a creditable alternative, though both this and The Excelsior were owned by Trusthouse Forte.

    It is also featured in Phaidon's excellent 'Boring Postcards' book.

    The Excelsior Hotel was used as the start & finish venue for the International Gulf London Motor Rally in 1967 & 1968. The event was a major motor-sport event back then and attracted teams from all over Europe.

    I used to go to this hotel with my parents several times a week. We were members of the gym, where I learned how to swim in their swimming pool. I have incredibly happy memories of my many visits there. I don't know what happened to this hotel but I do recall visiting in 2006 and the pool had been converted into something else.

      I was a waiter in 74. There was a battle between Turkish and Greek Cypriot head waiters. Ken was great. Restaurant manager was mr sherry.

    Happy memories of this wonderful hotel which was our night stop as aircrew when I was a flight attendant with Laker Airways (SkyTrain) in the 80's. Such friendly and helpful staff, great bar and comfortable accommodation with chocolate biscuits part of in-room hospitality. Great times - great people. So nostalgic. ♥️👌✈️ Liz

    I was the hotel accountant at the hotel in 1970 - 71. During this time Trust House hotel and Forte & co merged. I left to become a district auditor with said THF Ltd. Before the end of 1971 I was promoted to district accountant based in south Wales. Good times!

    My mum was head receptionist in the 60s. She met the Rolling Stones , Paul Newman and Yuri Gregarin whilst working there.
