The Steam Engine Tavern was a big Chesters house on the corne of Higher Sheffield Street and Dainton Street near Ardwick Station. Shown in 1963 and 1969 at the archives, it may have stood on this corner (if indeed the lost Higher Sheffield Street once intersected here), looking towards the railway viaduct.

I used to work in the building pictured... and can confirm the pub was on the car park.Apparently the pub burned down in mysterious circumstances. Its the first time i've seen any pictures so thanks for posting.Do you have any pictures of the buildings in the background .. as this was owned by Chesters for deliveries (i think) as it still retains stables.
ReplyDeleteFred Feast who played Fred Gee in Coronation Street had it in the 80s and could often be found behind the bar. Real nice bloke.
DeleteI went to the opening night with Fred but I'm sure it was Johnny briggs pub
DeleteMy parents owned this pub in the 80's. Fred was actually a tenant upstairs and came down at the weekend to work behind the bar. We knew the whole cast as a result who regularly visited. Fred lived there rent free, due to the punters he would bring in due to his role in Coronation St. And yes, he was a really nice bloke.
DeleteAccording to family accounts, Chesters Steam Engine Tavern and the brewery were owned (or operated) by members of the Kent family. My great grandfather Alfred Kent and his brother, Robert, sold their shares in said establishments to other family members, and immigrated to Canada in 1882. I have pictures taken in July, 1987 of the pub and brewery and the old stable buildings. Any other information would be appreciated.
