The new Royal Oak was a classic inter-war estate pub with numerous rooms - saloon bar, refreshment room, ladies room, public bar and assembly room. Healthier pursuits alongside drinking were encouraged with the bowling green and tennis courts to the rear, as seen on the 1938 map after the estate was built to the south of Altrincham Road.

There is a still a building offering refreshments of sorts to the Baguley community on the site of the Royal Oak, although sadly it's the cardboard, grease and fizzy pop of McDonald's. It's debatable whether this ugly low rise building and its junk food fayre offers more to the locals than the lost Royal Oak.

I lived in it as a boy. It was an amazing building!
ReplyDeleteI also lived there as a child. I loved exploring the unused rooms upstairs full of dust and cobwebs!

ReplyDeleteI lived there as a child. My parents ran it. It was a great place to explore as mentioned above by the anonymous people who said they lived there as children; I’d like to know who you are? I was born there and there until I was nearly 10. The disco, weddings, bowling green, tennis courts and great local people. Shame it went to McD.
ReplyDeleteAs a latecomer to Wythenshawe, it amazes me that while the Royal Oak inn and Baguley main line rail station managed to stay open and thriving in Victorian free market conditions when Baguley was a rural hamlet - and remained in place as Wythenshawe consumed the area - THEN CLOSED in the high noon of the welfare state. To be replaced by a McD's and a severely impractical Metrolink service.
ReplyDeleteWythenshawe isn't that bad a place, but it suffers from the problems common to all large housing developments, and it's a shame existing features that might have been socially useful were just razed off the map.
