This once-popular local's boozer on the Old Trafford - Whalley Range border closed down in 2010. The Throstles Nest was also a match day boozer for Man Utd fans but despite this it has gone the way of so many inner city alehouses.
The Throstles Nest is next door to the Old Trafford Conservative club on Seymour Grove, and is still shown as open in 2009 on Google streetmaps.

It opened in 1968. As an impoverished student, I got thrown out for sitting with the same pint for two hours.
ReplyDeleteWell as someone who lived there ( my parents were managers for whitbreead ) an alehouse in its heyday it was not ! A popular food venue for office staff from Seymour Grove and Trafford Park with a great pub group downstairs in the Gaiety Bar and Al A Carte restaurant upstairs popular with local residents too. A match day boozer it was not a bit too far from Old Trafford football ground much nearer to the cricket ground in fact. No stranger to celebrities a regular haunt to the cast of Coronation Street in the seventies when filming nearby Geoffrey Hughes Bernard Youens Jean Alexander etc As for inner city well Seymour Grove is hardly inner city ! It's not even in the the center of Chorlton let alone Manchester. So for those who remember it's hey day I am sure remember it with fondness for those who only know it in its sad decline I say you missed a real gem.
ReplyDeleteMy Dad used to drink in here in the late seventies/early eighties. Had more bottles of coke and crisps sat waiting in his truck in the car park than I care to remember.
ReplyDeleteWe would go for a nice cheap pub lunch when we were at nursing school on nell lane for withington hospital. 1976. Only one of us had a car!
ReplyDeleteIn the early 1970’s used to frequent here every Friday lunchtime, with colleagues from the Bass Charrington offices located at the top end of Seymour Grove. Had lots of laughs
ReplyDeletebrings back good memories, sad to see it go into decline.
I worked at Bass Charrington on Seymour Grove from Aug 70 to Apr 74 so odds on I probably know you. It was my first job after leaving school and indeed I remember the Friday lunchtimes at the Throstles Nest. A very long time ago but I remember many names of people who worked at that site and I often wonder what happened to them
DeleteI worked for Hoechst UK in the same building as Bass Charrington (floor 1,3 &4) from 1970 to 1981. Had many a celebration with work colleagues in the Throstles, including my getting married in 1971. Coincidentally, my brother moved into the same offices when working for Northern Counties Housing.
ReplyDeleteI was recently reading a Biography of Jimmy Murphy, ex-manchester, assistant manager to
ReplyDeleteMatt Busby, It is mentioned in the Biography
Jimmy, drank in this Pub, now and again after he retired. Jimmy, also lived in Whalley Range.
Anyway, Peace to all.
I worked here from 1988 until 1995. Started collecting glasses at weekends from the age of 15, then quickly learnt other aspects of the trade . It was a very busy pub in the late 80's but slowly declined as the years went by.
ReplyDeleteI have alot of fond memories from my time here
