Derby, Derby Street

Derby, Derby Street, Ordsall, 1971. (c) Arthur Brougham with family's permission.

Known as the 'Big Derby' to set it apart from the Derby Arms, the 'Little Derby', the Derby Hotel was finally granted its full license in 1872, four years after opening.  It had been built for £3,000 as a first-class hotel for district, and the building of 256 new houses in this part of Ordsall around Derby Street sealed the deal.

Stopford Brewery were the first brewers to own the Derby, before the Palatine Bottling Company and then Walker & Homfray took over.  The pub passed to Wilsons in 1968 and it lasted another 10 years before closing its doors for the last time on the evening of Sunday 22 July 1978 [1].

    1. I moved in approximately April/May 1977 with my 1st husband. We were the landlords. My eldest daughter was born in the Dec and we ran the pub until it closed down. I remember the last night it was a sad time for lots of the customers. We gave it a good send off.

  2. In '76 There was a fire in one of the back bedrooms started by my brother lighting a candle in the front function room upstairs, Wilsons decided to knock the pub down and we moved to the Angel Hotel on chapel street.
