This is one old Maine Road boozer I don't recall, though I suspect this is the pub that's been bothering me for years. There's always one prematch boozer I couldn't place, that we went in once in the early '90s having parked in a strange place for some reason. It must have been the Fallowfield. The above scan is from the locally well-knownTed Knott (Droylsden), and the same photo of the Wilsons house from 1970 is at the archives with one from 1973. Today, the pub has been flattened and replaced by new build flats, although is an identical building to the still standing priest's house on the other side of St Kentigerns Social Club.

ReplyDeleteYes a pre match pub much loved in the 50s and 60s by those coming down Yew Tree Road from Withington. Huge bar with three rooms and vault downstairs together with out sales and upstairs a concert and function room. Disasterously remodelled interior of the mid 70s resulted in the real drinkers quitting it.
ReplyDeleteWow well i was married next door to the Fallowfield Pub and our wedding reception in the fal which was the Rushton family get together public house. Some Good times spent in their🍷
ReplyDeleteAnother traditional pub that fell victim to the 1970s ill conceived craze to "theme"interiors using bizarre props that bore no relation to the boozers perception of a relaxing drinking environment, that is unless,a badly constructed mock stagecoach swinging (when pushed by patrons) from the ceiling on towing rope is your idea of a good night out.Throw in more steps and slanted floors than Blackpool Fun House and some wall mounted bales of hay and "chicken in the basket"and the refit was complete!
ReplyDeleteNot a stagecoach, mate, it wasa hay cart.
ReplyDeleteHi there, I wonder if anyone could tell me where abouts the Fallowfield Hotel actually was.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone got any more images of the Fallowfield Hotel? My grandma met my grandad there back in 1956 and she would love to see more pictures of it. Thank you
ReplyDeleteWe took management of a pub called the Wellington on Nicholas croft Manchester in 1968.
ReplyDeleteThe people who were leaving the Wellington went to manage the fallowfield.
I think they were called Moran.
When we decided to give up the Wellington the Morans came back, they liked the Wellington better than the Fallowfield they said.
We were Kathleen and Paddy Magee.
